EXPLANATORY NOTES

what you’re asking about: Apollodorus addresses the whole dialogue to a group of unnamed companions, only one of whom speaks. This is the second time in two days that Apollodorus tells the story (the previous time to someone called Glaucon). Nussbaum’s fanciful theory that these two narrations bracket the news of Alcibiades’ death reaching Athens is so brilliant that it scarcely matters whether or not it is right.

Phalerum: a village on the coast south-west of Athens.

a bit of fun: it is not perfectly clear what is amusing about what he says. Textual emendation has been suggested, but short of that, we are probably to imagine a bantering tone of voice.
